Orders – Appropriations – Experiences

The terms “Orders, Appropriations and Experiences” mark the parameters for research at the Northeast Institute. The historical processes and social structures to be analyzed in the context of this conceptual framework are closely intertwined. At the same time, each of the individual terms outlines dimensions and qualities that invite specific methodological and theoretical approaches and insights. In this way, the complexity of northeastern European history can be investigated and represented with discrimination. Of central importance for research at the Northeast Institute is the history of the German population and its neighbors. This is approached and investigated as it may be understood in light of the guiding concept of transnational historical interdependence. The chronological focus is on the 19^th and 20^th centuries.

Planned Encounters

Collective research project of the Northeast Institute

The term “Cold War” refers to an era of separation; yet the conflict it indicates occurred at a time when more and more people took the step of traveling to and exploring other lands. Socialist countries beyond the “Iron Curtain” were open to tourism. The “Planned Encounters” project addresses various expressions of this west-east tourism.
